Update:Hurricane flooded again on October 22. Families need help now.

How to give and help

Southern Utah

Southern Utah has more help than most people know about. We're the ones who find it.

Food, rent help, a clinic that will see you without insurance. Most of it already exists here. What's missing is the person who knows where it is, calls ahead, and gets you to the right door on the right day. That's what we do, and it's what your donation pays for.

Help you can actually use, because a person checked.

Every entry in our directory was called, visited, or read closely by a real person. The notes are the useful part. Here are three, word for word.

    Food & Everyday Essentials

    Hurricane Valley Food Pantry

A food pantry in Hurricane run by the Utah Food Bank where you pick up free groceries. It opened in a large new building in June 2024.

    Good to know

Mon 10-2; Tue 10-12 and 2-4; Wed 11-1 and 3-6; Thu 10-12 and 2-4; Fri 10-2; 2nd Sat 9-12. WATCH THE MIDDAY CLOSURES - arriving at 1pm Tuesday means a locked door. Wednesday evening to 6pm is the slot that works for people who work days.

    Health & Wellness

Utah Tech University Dental Hygiene Clinic

A teaching clinic where dental hygiene students clean teeth and take x-rays, watched by qualified instructors. Much cheaper than a normal dentist - most things cost $5 to $40.

    Good to know

CLOSED BETWEEN SEMESTERS AND ALL SUMMER - someone in pain in July will find the doors shut. Always ring first. This is hygiene work only: cleanings, x-rays, sealants. NOT fillings or extractions. Email DHclinic@utahtech.edu

  • Checked: Call to confirm

    Mental Health & Recovery

Behavioral Health Access Center (St. George Regional Hospital)

A walk-in place to go when someone is in a mental health or substance crisis and needs help right now but doesn't want a regular emergency room. No appointment needed. A nurse checks you in and a crisis worker does a medical and mental health assessment.

    Good to know

Finding it matters: it's on Level 4 of the North Tower, NOT at the main ER entrance. Their page loads hours by script and never shows them - say 'walk in any time, but call 435-251-4480 first' rather than promising 24/7.

Each of these is one of 250 resources we keep track of.

Your money isn't a food box. It's the phone call that finds the food box that already exists.

Most of what we do would count as overhead somewhere else. Here, it's the whole job. Nobody else pays for the finding, the calling ahead, the checking, and the handoff. That's the part that turns a list of names into help a person can actually use.

“Before spending charitable money or recreating a service, ask: does this resource already exist?”
  1. Finding it

Reading the small print, the hours, and the eligibility rules so you don't have to.

  2. Calling ahead

Confirming a place is open before anyone drives across town to a locked door.

  3. Keeping it current

Places move, close, and change their hours. A list is only useful if someone keeps checking it.

  4. Making the handoff

Answering the message from someone who doesn't know where to start, and walking them to the right door.

What we're working on right now

Each of these is a real situation in southern Utah, posted by someone close to it. We list what's needed, not who's hurting.

The Nonprofit Roundtable

Why not just give to the food bank?

Please do. We're not trying to replace anyone. Southern Utah's nonprofits sit at one table with us to say what they do, what they're short on, and where the overlaps are, so nobody duplicates anybody. Before we spend a dollar we ask the same question every time.

“How can we support what already exists?”

  • Every other Tuesday, 9am, at SwitchPoint
  • Everyone says what they need
  • The overlaps do the work

Give

Imagine the difference we can make, if we did it together.

A gift to Kindness in Motion pays for the part of helping that nobody else funds: the finding, the calling, the checking, and the handoff. Give once or monthly.
